Sclerotherapy

  • Sclerotherapy is a non-invasive procedure that involves injecting saline or chemical solution into the varicose veins. This causes the vein to close or collapse and the vein is eventually broken down and discarded by the body. The blood then circulates only in the other, non-varicose veins. It remains the “gold standard” in treatment of visible diseased veins. This method is effective for treatment of spider veins and well as larger, distended veins. In most cases, regular activity may be resumed immediately, although it is recommended to wear compression stockings for 1 week after each treatment.

  • Varicose veins on the legs, ankles and feet can be treated with sclerotherapy.

  • Sclerotherapy sessions take between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on how extensive the treatment area is. If the treated area is small, you may only require one appointment. If more are needed, healthcare providers will usually leave several weeks between treatments to allow for proper healing.

  • Sclerotherapy is generally considered a safe and effective treatment. However, it is not for everyone, and there are some health conditions that make it absolutely contraindicated. If trained, qualified healthcare professionals do sclerotherapy correctly, it is a safe and effective treatment. The most common side effects include skin irritation and pain at the injection site, which are temporary and usually go away within a few days.

  • The injection itself may feel like a brief sting or prick, and a mild burning sensation or cramping may follow as the solution works on the vein. In general, the pain is often short-lived and manageable, but larger veins or more extensive treatments may cause more noticeable discomfort.

  • You usually see the results of sclerotherapy for small varicose veins or spider veins in 3 to 6 weeks. Larger veins might take 3 to 4 months. Some people need more than one treatment to get the results they want.

  • $130.00/per treatment (3-6 treatments recommended)

The amount of treatments to achieve desired results will be determined by consultation.

  • Post-care instructions after sclerotherapy treatment include:

    • Avoid strenuous exercise for 1-2 days.

    • Do not pick at any areas on your legs.

    • Avoid washing with perfumed goods.

    • Avoid waxing or shaving the legs.
